abstract = {The Internet of Drones (IoD) is a networking architecture born to leverage 

the huge potential of Internet-connected drones. A key challenge for the 

IoD is represented by the technological fragmentation of its components. To 

this end, a middleware solution, namely Drone Control Layer (DCL), is 

proposed hereby, which enables complex mission design when heterogeneous 

swarms are considered. The DCL is made of four interfaces which abstract 

underlying drivers and hardware, provide a set of common primitives to 

applications, enable communications between drones, and other logical 

entities. To illustrate its applicability, relevant scenarios of interest 

are analyzed in details.},

abstract = {In the Internet of Drones (IoD) architecture, both drone-to-drone and 

drone-to-ground communications may take place, depending on the application 

scenario. In this context, 5G can play a key role given its native support 

to high speed and low latency communications. However, in real scenarios, 

several constraints arise related to energy, kinematics, and connectivity. 

In this work, a relevant use case is considered, involving an Unmanned 

Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that surveys specific areas to acquire high-resolution 

video signals. Before the mission ends, it delivers gathered data to a 

ground control infrastructure, through Base Stations (BSs) deployed in the 

region. The model envisions mission accomplishment and communication 

reliability in terms of Out-of-Service (OoS) probabilities. All of the 

above leads to a Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Fractional Programming (MINLFP) 

problem, which is hard to solve. The solution presented in this work is 

based on a novel optimization framework that designs an energy-efficient 

mission plan. The goal is achieved through Block Coordinate Descendent 

(BCD) and Successive Convex Approximation (SCA) techniques, combined with 

Dinkelbach's Algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of 

the proposal in terms of energy efficiency and data rate.},

gaining momentum thanks to its inherent ability to 

capitalize the pros of both Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) 

and networking technologies. This work discusses a scenario 

involving a drone carrying out a surveying mission along a 

predefined path. With the aim of maximizing the gathered 

and transmitted high resolution video signals, a 

comparative study is proposed, encompassing two different 

radio coverage conditions. The resulting optimization 

problems are solved with different techniques: one of them 

is solved in closed-form expression, while the other one is 

approached using Linear Programming (LP). Simulation 

results are also presented to demonstrate the effectiveness 

of the proposed solutions.},
